Locally grown nuts (walnuts, heartnuts, black walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, hickory and butternuts) and some unusual fruit (persimon, figs, pawpaws) About Us Grimo Nut Nursery was established in 1974, but Ernie Grimo's interest in edible landscape trees began long before that. Throughout his childhood he loved to explore the plants and trees that were abundant in Niagara Falls where he was raised. His Italian heritage complimented his natural appreciation of locally grown foods. Along with his wife, Marion, their first home was landscaped with dozens of fruit and nut trees. They realized the need for more space and purchased the 11 acre farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1974. It has since grown to be 14 acres. Since few nut trees were available and little was known about the potential for nut crops in Ontario, Ernie decided to set up test orchards to evaluate the best nut trees that would grow in the Niagara region. Getting help from experienced growers and local pioneers, he was able to get grafted cultivars and seedling sources from across North America as well as the commercial nut growing regions from around the world. These trees are grown and tested for their individual nut quality. Each tree is evaluated on several factors including flavour, productivity, commercial viability, cracking ability, and disease resistance. The trees that prove to be outstanding are then grafted and sold through the nursery. These orchards also serve as the seed source for the nursery business. As the business grew, and the trees matured Ernie found that he had surplus nut crops. Marion began selling the nuts from the farm to those interested in eating fresh locally grown nuts. Besides the farm life, Ernie also taught for 35 years in the Niagara Falls area schools. Marion and Ernie have four children. Daughter Linda lived in Arizona and taught for six years before returning to the Niagara region in 1999. She has three young boys who help harvest and enjoy munching on the fresh nuts. Marion passed away in early 2010. Ernie happily married Bernice in the summer of 2011. She is a wonderful addition to the farm life and greets and serves customers. Ernie, Bernice, Linda, and her sons enjoy meeting with customers who stop in to purchase the fresh crop. Our nut sales only occur at our farm gate and through this coop. Grimo Nut Nursery grows exceptional quality fresh tree nuts. We welcome you to try what fresh nuts really taste like! Browse through our Products for Sale Ingredients Nuts as described in product information. Generally nuts are in the shell unless otherwise specified as Shelled which means they are cracked, sorted and ready to eat. *Occasionally we miss a piece of shell so please watch carefully. Practices (our standards for raising or making our products) The nuts are machine and hand harvested, cleaned, slightly dried, and ready to eat. The orchards are sprayed only as needed for pest intervention based on our farm Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system. Round-up is used as weed control at the base of the orchard trees to keep the mowers from getting too close to the trees in the summer. The fruit sold through us has not been sprayed at all, except for the round up around the base of the tree trunks. Highlights this Month Enjoy the amazing flavour of fresh nuts! |
